What is cavitation?

Ellie Lee

2 Apr 2025

Lorsque la pression locale du liquide dans la pompe chute à la pression critique, des bulles se forment dans le liquide.

Cavitation is the whole process of bubbles gathering, moving, splitting and eliminating. The critical pressure is generally close to the vaporization pressure.

What are the hazards of cavitation?

1. Corrosion of flow components

The high pressure, high temperature and shock wave generated by the bubble rupture repeatedly cause the surface material of the impeller, pump shell and other flowing parts to peel off, resulting in pitting and pits, reducing the strength and wear resistance of the parts.

2. Pump performance degradation

The energy exchange in the impeller is disturbed and destroyed when the pump cavitation, and the external performance is that Q-H curve, Q-P, Q-η curve decreases, which will interrupt the liquid flow in the pump and cannot work.

The most likely parts to produce cavitation

At the inlet of the impeller

On the back of the blade inlet edge

At the volute tongue.

At the sealing ring between the outer edge of the impeller and the pump casing

First stage impeller in a multistage pump

Measures to improve anti-cavitation

1. Improve centrifugal pump design

Optimize impeller design

Double suction impeller

Shorten the spacing between the impeller and the volute tongue

2. Reasonable selection of installation position and working conditions

Lower mounting height

Reduce suction line resistance

3. Improve the conveying medium and operating environment

Reduce the temperature of the delivered liquid

Reduce the saturated vapor pressure of the delivered liquid

Increase the pressure at the suction surface
