Common problems and solutions of centrifugal pumps
1. Cavitation
Problem: When the pressure in the pump body drops below the vapor pressure of the liquid, bubbles result. These bubbles then collapse, damaging the impeller and reducing the efficiency of the pump.
Solution: The solution to this problem is to increase the pressure in the suction line or reduce the speed of the pump.
2. Pump dry running
Problem: A centrifugal pump dry running or not having enough fluid is a significant problem because it can cause the pump to overheat, damage the impeller, and reduce the efficiency of the pump. Centrifugal pumps rely on pumped fluids to cool and lubricate impellers and other moving parts. When the flow rate is insufficient, the impeller and other components can generate heat due to friction, resulting in overheating and potential damage.
Solution: It is essential to ensure that the centrifugal pump is always operating at sufficient flow to prevent damage and ensure optimal performance.
3. Pump vibration
Problem: Pump vibration can cause serious problems as it can lead to mechanical damage, reduced efficiency and increased operating costs. Pump vibration may be caused by a variety of factors, such as misalignment, bearing wear, impeller imbalance, cavitation, loose parts, etc.
Solution: Therefore, the root cause of pump vibration must be determined and corrective measures taken, such as re-aligning, replacing worn bearings or impellers, or adjusting pump operating conditions to prevent excessive vibration. Regular inspections and maintenance can also help identify and resolve potential vibration issues before they become a major problem.
